ceramics

My ceramic work consists of pieces that directly explore the relationship between colour and shape. The compositions are abstract, but reflect our surrounding habitat. There are also arrangements that echo recognisable universal landmarks – the horizon, the sun, the sea and the land.

I use heavily-grogged clay slabs, onto which I print using under-glaze colour. The forms are then hand-built and textural engobe and glaze combinations are applied after bisque firing. The final reduction firing adds warmth and texture to the vivid colours.

In my second year of university, I was honoured to achieve a special mention in a jewellery competition between the Wedgwood Museum and the University of Wolverhampton. The pieces were selected to go into the permanent collection at the Museum.  This work was inspired by Wedgwood’s history of working with artists from different backgrounds, and specifically the print work of Eric Ravilious and Eduardo Paolozzi.
